OUR MANDATE
Cinema Cartier is a unique place devoted to the screening of original films never shown before in Quebec City, with the emphasis on classic movies of yesterday and modern works of great film directors, as well as independent features. Le Cartier is also showing foreign film discoveries from the six continents. In a few words, this 117-seat auditorium offers movie buffs a unique opportunity to watch films on the big screen, films they would otherwise not have access to.

PROGRAMMING
On top of presenting the latest releases, Cinema Cartier concentrates in showing all types of films rarely shown in a movie theatre in Quebec City: classics, cult films, documentaries, remakes, retrospectives and hommages. The status of PERMANENT FESTIVAL has been granted by the Régie du Cinéma du Québec, which highlights such cinematic plurality.

Programming is written up in an independent publication: LA REVUE DU QUARTIER MONTCALM, that is distributed evey two weeks around different places of interest all over Quebec City. Programming is also available on our Web site and advertised in the local media.

LOCATION
Located in the heart of Quebec City, in the same location where its predecessor stood from 1928 to 1987, Cinema Cartier is a well-situated, unique and special prime location, which only adds to its ambiance both in its surroundings as well as for the clientele. Located on the edge of the Plains of Abraham and two steps away from Musée national des Beaux-Arts du Québec (now known as Musée du Québec), as well as Parliament Hill, Cartier Avenue serves a local and touristic clientele. Located amidst an artery of restaurants and nightclubs, Cinema Cartier always has a stream of people passing by, both day and night.

THE TREATMENT
With the latest emergence of new technologies, Cinema Cartier maintains the highest standards of cinematic excellence, on par with other cinemas in Quebec and across Canada. The projected image is exclusively digital. Our equipement makes it possible to screen movies that are recorded on various media, for exemple: Betacam, Betacam-SP, DVD (pal, secam, ntsc), computer server, etc.

Every technical element has been carefully selected to enable faithful reproduction of the original film format to be shown.

IMAGE
The HighContrast AudioVision screen, custom-made by DA-LITE ensures optimal contrast and colour definition. This 20’ x 11’ screen is exceptionally big for a 117-seat movie theatre. .

The high-performance TriDigital HD6K projector (SX-6000D with 5000 ANSI lumens), made by the Japanese firm NEC, has been designed to meet all the post-production studio's criteria, including High-Definition 1080P

NEC has recently developed a new decoding technology called TriDigital Image Processing, which brings back the “film look” to a digital projection. Three digital processors are used to optimize decoding while transferring film to digital projection. The ColorBit pre-processor decodes the digital signal in order to emulate all the features related to film projection. The DeepBlackBit processor brings out the dynamic aspect of the original film in order to produce deep black shades which serve to maintain the contrast and the details of the original film, without increasing background noise.

Finally, the Wide ColorBit post-processor gives an image that overcomes the risks associated with the RGB technique, which would otherwise result in producing a video-like image. That step is crucial since film is not RGB-supported, but a collection of dyed particles, suspended in an emulsion interacting with the light of a conventional mechanical projector.

SOUND
The LEXICON MC-12 digital audio decoder controller is considered the benchmark for decrypting sound tracks encoded according to Dolby Digital, dts, dts-ES, THX SurroundEX, and Dolby Pro Logic II standards, among others.

The new generation of Marantz DVD players are used. Thanks to its global compatibility, the MD930 model is able to read every DVD format.

In order to provide exceptional sound quality, an FDS-366 digital processor, made by the British firm BSS, is used to ensure perfect sound equalization and alignment between high-pitch and low-pitch front speakers.

The positioning of the speakers allows for the reproduction of every type of encoding, up to and including the 7.1 format. All speakers are made by JBL Cinema and are THX-approved.

More than 7,000 watts of sound will be produced by THX-approved CROWN amplifiers. The acoustic design of the theatre reduces ambiant noise to the minimum and reverberation time is approximately 0.4 seconds for a bandwidth varying between 125HZ and 15,000HZ. This special attention only serves to enhance a natural listening environment, without coloration or distortion.

COMFORT
Lastly, the movie theatre is furnished with the highest in elegance and comfort “Regent” style concert seating, made by Ducharme International. Their superior quality design allows for an optimum movie experience, unparalleled by any other brand.
